Systems
Our systems combine advanced solids separation, compact
design, and circular‑economy benefits to deliver cleaner water with
lower costs. Engineered for performance and built for sustainability,
our solutions help industries and municipalities treat wastewater
more efficiently; saving space, reducing sludge, and unlocking new
resource‑recovery opportunities.
Three Processes, One Compact Unit
A Salsnes Filter system combines three critical processes into one compact unit – solids separation, sludge thickening and dewatering. The rotating filtermesh removes >50% TSS, and >20% BOD from effluent and produces drier sludge (20-30% dry matter). It’s the only filter design that can replace conventional primary treatment and fulfill the EU regulations on primary treatment.

Cogwheel and Mesh Filter
The mesh filter is made of polyethylene and is very durable. The patented way it’s mounted and tensioned to the cogwheel improves performance and allows the filter to handle higher flow rates and solids loadings, increasing treatment capacity in a smaller footprint.
Hot Water Flush
A hot water flush valve is available to those facilities that have a high concentration of fat, oil and grease (FOG) in their wastewater. Operating only two to four times daily, the intermittent hot water flush effectively cleans the hard-to-remove FOG from mesh filter openings.
Air Knife Mesh Filter Cleaning System
The built-in Air Knife is a patented mesh filter cleaning system that automatically cleans the rotating mesh filter using a blade of compressed air. Compared to scrapers, brushes or water-based cleaning systems, air is gentler on mesh to prolong its life and keeps sludge drier for more effective dewatering.
Integrated or Stand-alone Dewatering Unit
To save space and money, the enclosed SF system contains an optional integrated dewatering process. Sludge drops into the collection area from the thickening process at 3 – 8 % DM and is conveyed across the unit by an auger. It can then be fed to a sludge stabilization process (e.g. direct digester feed); Or processed further through the dewatering unit to produce sludge that is 20 –30% DM (without the need for any additional dewatering equipment).
For larger installations, a stand-alone dewatering unit is available to dewater sludge from multiple filters. It can apply a higher pressure to produce even drier sludge (typically 20 – 40% DM).

Product benefits
Compact Physical Footprint
A Salsnes Filter system will typically use only 1/10th the land requirements of conventional primary wastewater treatment systems, making it ideal for those areas where land is expensive or unavailable.

Reduced Demand on Downstream Processes
When one step of the treatment process is overloaded, it can negatively affect the whole treatment process. A Salsnes Filter system can reduce loadings to ease demand and increase capacity of secondary treatment processes such as:
- Oxidation ditches
- Sequencing batch reactors
- Biological aerated filters
- Dissolved air flotation
- Moving bed bio reactors
- Membrane bio reactors
Cost Efficiency
Salsnes Filter has a 30-60% lower investment and operating cost as compared to a conventional primary treatment system.*

*Graphic depicts an evaluation completed by the Norwegian State Pollution Control Agency to discover cost efficient technology that could fulfill the European Union’s stringent criteria for primary treatment. The savings for the Salsnes Filter are substantial. The system costs half that of conventional primary sedimentation and clarification.
Decreased Volume of Sludge for Disposal
For many wastewater treatment plants, sludge disposal is one of their larger expenses. This leaves many facilities looking for ways to reduce their total sludge costs. The sooner sludge is removed from the process, the more potential cost savings it can trigger in downstream processes.
The Salsnes Filter system is designed to quickly thicken and dewater with its integrated processes to produce the driest sludge possible. The sludge exiting a Salsnes Filter system is 20 – 30% dry matter (DM), while primary clarifier sludge can be 2% DM.

Unlimited Design Flow Capacity
The modular design of the Salsnes Filter system allows for installation configurations to serve any capacity requirement. Filters can perform together as one, sharing components such as the blower for the Air Knife filter mesh cleaning system.
Minimized Carbon Footprint
This carbon footprint analysis compares the Salsnes Filter SF:6000 to a clarifier in a 2 MGD (315 m3/h) municipal wastewater treatment plant in North America. It reveals that the Salsnes Filter system has a substantially lower environmental impact mainly because less concrete is required for installation.

All the Flexibility you Need
With both Enclosed and Open modular systems, unlimited design flow capacity and the option to install indoors or outdoors, a Salsnes Filter system provides all the flexibility you need.
SF Systems
The SF System is a fully integrated solids‑separation solution designed for high‑efficiency primary treatment. With its compact footprint and automated operation, it delivers reliable performance while reducing sludge volumes and operational costs. Ideal for facilities seeking a proven, space‑saving alternative to traditional primary clarification.
SFK Systems
The SFK System offers a modular, flexible approach to solids separation, making it easy to adapt to a wide range of plant layouts and capacity needs. Its streamlined design simplifies installation and maintenance while maintaining strong filtration efficiency. A smart choice for facilities that need scalable performance without compromising reliability.
SFKC Systems
The SFKC System combines the modular benefits of the SFK line with an enclosed configuration for enhanced control and environmental protection. This closed design minimizes odor, improves operator safety, and supports installations where containment is essential. It delivers consistent, high‑quality filtration in demanding or sensitive environments.
